Rodent Control in Tigard

Fanno Creek and the trees along it covered in snow, in Tigard, Oregon
Fanno Creek in Tigard after a snowfall.

Tigard sits just south of Beaverton, and Fanno Creek runs through both. The creek starts in Portland's West Hills, passes through Beaverton and Tigard, and joins the Tualatin River in Durham. Tigard's parks along it include Woodard Park, Englewood Park, Bonita Park, Dirksen Nature Park and Fanno Creek Park, and the Fanno Creek Greenway Trail is planned to follow it.

Creek corridors work like rat highways. They give cover and water, and the homes backing onto them see more activity at the back fence, the deck and the shed. Up in the Bull Mountain neighborhood, calls lean more toward mice in garages and the occasional roof rat.

Backing Onto Fanno Creek

If your back fence is on the creek or the trail, watch for burrows under decks and sheds and along the foundation, and keep blackberries cut back from the fence. Put the woodpile up on a rack, away from the house. Rat control and blackberries, ivy and rats cover the details.

Bull Mountain and Newer Neighborhoods

Garages, dryer vents and crawl space vents let mice into houses on the hill each fall, newer homes included. See rodent exclusion.

Questions People Ask

We live on the Fanno Creek trail. Are we stuck with rats?

No. A creek gives rats water and cover, but that doesn't mean every yard along it has a problem. An inspection tells you whether yours does and how they'd get in.
